All papers can be submitted by the author(s) via our online manuscript submission system available at http://submit.genome.org.
Files that can be used by the online system for reviewing purposes are: Word, WordPerfect, PDF, Text, and Rich Text Format. If your file is in LaTex format, please also submit in a PDF format (and include the .tex file as your 'source' file). Image and Table file formats accepted are GIF, TIFF, EPS, PDF, and JPEG. (Please note: For accepted manuscripts, only .tif and .eps electronic art formats can be used by the printer [see below for details on figure format for accepted manuscripts]. For reviewing purposes, all of the above art formats are fine.) For tables, the system accepts most word processing formats as well; NOTE the system does not accept Excel files at this time--please paste tables created in Excel into a Word document format; these can then be easily submitted. Supplemental files can be submitted in .txt, .doc, .ppt, .jpeg, .jpg, .gif, .pdf, .xls, .eps, .tif, .html, .htm, .satml, .avi, .mov, .mpg, .rtf, and .xml formats since these will be downloaded as needed and will not be converted into a PDF with the text figures and tables.
PAGE numbers must be included on all pages, and Figure and Table numbers must be presented on the FRONT of the figures and tables when posted online. Note that figures and tables may not be clear in the PDF version created for the reviewers unless references to figure or table numbers are on the FRONT.
Please note: Files that CANNOT be used by the online system include: Any Tex-type files [convert to a PDF], Excel (.xls) [convert to Word], and Bitmap (.bmp), PICT (.pict), Photoshop (.psd), PowerPoint (.ppt), CorelDRAW (.cdr) [convert all figure files to Word, GIF, TIFF, EPS, or JPEG]. There is a graphics converter program available as shareware that can convert electronic figures to usable formats at http://www.webattack.com/get/imagetransformer.shtml. This program will NOT upgrade the quality of the image, but can convert the file type to one that can be used by the online system and make your figures suitable for review purposes.
Embargo Policy. Submitted manuscripts are subject to press embargo and must not be discussed with the media, including other scientific journals, prior to the embargo date, except within one week before the embargo period ends where the embargo date and time is clearly indicated to all interested parties. Please contact the Editor for embargo details.
File Format. Final Submissions must be created either in Word or Wordperfect, though Word .doc files are the preferred file format. The publisher has the right to reject final submissions that are not created in one of these formats. Tables should also be created using Word's table format and saved directly within the Word manuscript file (.doc). (Tables that are not created and saved in Word will delay production.)
Math Objects Within Final Submissions. Before printing or submitting your Word file, please make sure to UPDATE any MathType objects in the file; otherwise, italics and other font specs might be lost. Greek symbols should be inserted directly from Word's "symbol insert" pulldown menu; equations/schemes should be inserted using MathType or Word's Equation Editor. Please double-check your Word manuscript printout visually to ensure the accuracy of fonts within the Word file.
Color Artwork. Note that color artwork is processed in CMYK format for print and processed in RGB format for online. To avoid delays at the page proof stage, authors are expected to have reviewed their artwork in both color formats prior to final submission. Final submission of electronic color artwork must be in CMYK (for print purposes), though remember that online views of color artwork will be in RGB. Be aware that some color shifts between the two color modes are unavoidable. If you choose to submit color artwork digitally (in addition to high-quality reflective artwork, which is always required despite any digital artwork submission), the resolution of your file must be a minimum of 350 dpi. Digital artwork must be created either in Photoshop or Illustrator and saved as either .eps or .tif format. Details on electronic figure format requirements from our Printer are described in Submission of Electronic Figures for Accepted Manuscripts: Detailed Instructions.
If you are having difficulty with the Web site, please submit your problem through the feedback button at the online submission site. If you have specific questions about your manuscript, please contact the Editor via e-mail.
