Paper length in the journal is between two and 12 journal pages. A manuscript of 28-32 typed, DOUBLE-SPACED pages with 27 lines of 11-point text per page (a manuscript of 63,000 characters) with four to six figures and one or two tables will translate to 12 printed pages in the journal. All accepted manuscripts MUST include signatures from all authors, indicating that they have read and approved the content of the work and agreed to its publication in its current format. An Author Approval and Disclosure Statement is attached to the acceptance letter for this purpose, and should be faxed or mailed promptly after receipt. Manuscripts will NOT be processed in the absence of complete sets of signatures.
Hard-copy submission requires two copies of the manuscript and figures and an electronic version of the manuscript in WORD format. For online submission, a Microsoft WORD source file needs to be included in the submission; no hard copy of the manuscript text is required. Electronic versions of figures as TIFF or EPS files ONLY can be used at this stage. Details on electronic figure format requirements from our Printer are described in Submission of Electronic Figures for Accepted Manuscripts: Detailed Instructions. We require two hard copies of all original artwork for sizing and also for any color matching required, regardless of the availability of electronic files.
For color artwork, if more than one color is used, please choose colors that are far enough apart on the color spectrum in order to preserve maximum color distinction (e.g., black and some blues, as well as red and some oranges, can be difficult to distinguish when artwork is scaled for the journal page). Please also avoid using very light colors, such as pale yellow, since these tend to fade out and reproduce poorly. Use Helvetica typeface in point sizes no smaller than 8 pt and no larger than 10 pt, except for the main callouts (e.g., A, B, C), which should be 12-pt boldface.
In cases where manuscripts have been written in .tex-type programs and absolutely cannot be provided in Rich Text Format (.rtf) or Word (.doc), submit the LaTex file along with a final PDF in addition to the required two hard copies of the manuscript.
Genome Research will send all page proofs electronically to corresponding authors. Digital eProofs (which include instructions and query sheet), together with an Author Packet of forms to be signed, will be distributed to corresponding authors online in PDF format. Please remember that color artwork in eProofs is processed in RGB, though color artwork that appears in the print journal is processed in CMYK. (As noted in Online Manuscript Submission, authors are expected to have reviewed both color artwork formats onscreen prior to final artwork submission. Hard-copy art proofs will no longer be created.) Some color shift between the two color modes (RGB and CMYK) is unavoidable. In addition, colors viewed online depend to some extent on each monitor's resolution settings (likewise with printers), so some variation in color and contrast between the submitted image and the published artwork in print and online may occur. Each eProof will be accessible via a unique password that our compositor will send to the corresponding author in e-mail. Authors must review their eProofs within 48 hours.
eProofs are considered the final form of the paper and corrections at this stage incur charges, so authors are encouraged to keep changes to a minimum. Ensuring that the details of formatting and nomenclature have been followed prior to final acceptance will greatly reduce the need for changes at this stage. If additional data or substantive changes to the text, figures, or tables need to be made at this stage, they must be approved by the hsussman{at}cshl.edu.
Authors are required to print out and mark up their eProofs and to attach a typed list of corrections (noting PDF page, column, and line of correction) to CSHL Press. The marked-up pages and itemized corrections list can either be (1) faxed to CSHL Press at 516-422-4094; (2) sent via overnight delivery to CSHL Press, 500 Sunnyside Blvd., Woodbury, NY 11797-2924; or (3) in the case of just a handful of corrections, the itemized list of corrections (without copies of the marked-up page proofs) can simply be e-mailed to CSHL Press at journals@cshl.org. In addition to the itemized list of corrections and marked-up PDF printouts, authors must sign and return all Author Packet forms. Authors can opt to return these forms via e-mail, fax, or overnight mail.
To help defray the cost of publication, a charge of $40 per page will be made for publication in Genome Research. Authors unable to meet these charges should include a letter of explanation upon acceptance for publication; inability to meet these charges will have no effect on acceptance and publication of submitted papers.
All papers are freely available online six months after publication. In addition, Genome Research is now offering an Immediate Open Access option in which authors may pay a surcharge of $2000 to make their paper freely available online immediately upon publication. Authors may choose this option when page proofs are returned to Journals Production; choosing this option will have no effect on acceptance and publication of submitted papers.
