Cover Cover An artist's rendition of the coronavirus responsible for SARS was collapsed to six gray-scale levels, and each level was mapped to a specific oligonucleotide sequence. An array containing these oligonucleotide sequences was synthesized on a microscope slide using a maskless array synthesis process. The array was then hybridized to concentration gradient of six labeled oligonucleotides. Intensities in the final scanned image correspond to the concentration of each hybridized oligo. This microarray technology was used to capture "snap-shots" of the viral genome and track its molecular evolution during the recent SARS outbreak in Singapore.
