Cover Mature microRNAs are known to be processed from precursor RNA sequences resembling 'hairpin' secondary structures caused by Watson--Crick or G/U base pairings. A human figure comprised of hairpins is representative of the significant number of microRNA genes present in the mammalian genome. In this issue, a comprehensive picture of mammalian microRNA transcription is provided by systematically determining their map position and orientation in relation to genes and transcripts in the human and mouse genomes, respectively.
