The evolutionary origins of LTR retrotransposons remain enigmatic. Using a phylogenetic analysis of the Ribonuclease H domains, it now appears likely that LTR retrotransposons may have arisen by a fusion between both DNA-mediated and non-LTR elements, combining features of both mechanisms to circumvent the obstacle created by the nuclear envelope. (For details, see Malik et al., pp. 1187-1197.)
